About

Julie Tolvanen designs furniture and household objects from her studio at a former bakery in the Töölö neighborhood of central Helsinki.

Born in 1970 near Seattle and raised in Oregon, she received her architecture degree in 1992 from Washington University in St. Louis.

She worked as assistant to a cabinetmaker and also to an antique restorer before opening her own woodworking workshop in St. Louis, designing and built custom wood furniture for individual clients until 2007. She founded Egg Collective with three other women, designing and building limited production furniture with them from 2006-2011. In 2009, she moved to Helsinki to study for a master’s degree in furniture design at Aalto University School of Art & Design and started her own design agency after graduation.

Since 2001 Julie has taught courses in furniture design, design history, product design, and woodworking for various institutions including Washington University, University of Oregon, Penland School of Crafts, and Oregon School of Art and Craft.
